Muncie 4 speed lube. I have read several posts on various sites that talked about what lube to use in a Muncie 4 speed. Most say use GL4 80/90 wt. They say never use synthetic or GL5. The guy that rebuilt told me to use 100% synthetic Mobil 1. (local transmission shop that does only manual transmissions and gear boxes.
How to Rebuild a Muncie Four-Speed Transmission
Built in 1972 by Fred Kepler to race in IMSA and SCCA Trans Am and A/P competition. Fred Kepler transformed a factory equipped L71 427/435 hp car and built it to full L88 specifications, including a 650 hp 427 with M22 “Rock Crusher” transmission, with the intent to complete in IMSA, FIA and SCCA Trans AM. Upon completion the car was raced
Although some claim that the M23 is a ''rock crusher'', it is indicated that this box was assembled in both wide and close ratio components and also with straight cut gears common to the rock crusher (M22) transmission. Looks like you have a second design-feb. 28th, 1968, M20 or M21. Definitely not a rock crusher(no straight cut gears).
Rock Crusher M-22 Transmission. The transmission functions like a brand new transmission! It was shipped in a sturdy crate. Seller installed a new pencil gear to match the rear end ratio and tire height for free. Very happy with the purchase.
Muncie also had a second close-ratio transmission designated M22 and often referred to as the "rock-crusher," which was used behind the highest-performance engines and in Corvettes, the M22 is a highly sought-after performance transmission. It is the heavy-duty version of the 2.20:1 ratio M21 four-speed.
Originally purchased new from Jack Douglass Chevrolet in Hinsdale, Illinois, this 1968 L88 Corvette – serial #194378S414566 is finished in Le Mans Blue (976) over Medium Blue (414) vinyl interior. The M22 was eventually dubbed the “Rock Crusher”. It is a common misconception that all Muncie transmissions are “Rock Crushers”, but it is only the M22 that deserves that name. The M20 and M21 were both release in 1963, but it wasn’t until 1965 that the M22 hit the market. The M22 was created for the Corvette Grand Sport racing program.

The ST10 duplicated the current spline configuration, length, and shifter bolt patterns. The glory days of the 4-speed Muncie were over and BorgWarner once again was back in the saddle. The ST10’s production in GM vehicles was from 1974 to 1988. Because of production quality issues, no Corvettes were produced in 1983.
It was primarily designed as a road race transmission. The straighter angle of the gearset produced less heat and less end loading of the gear train. Combined with high impact alloy gears this 4 speed really pushed the limits of it''s aluminum case in drag race applications. Although the gears are not spur gears ( completely straight ) they

Muncie also had a second close-ratio transmission coded M22 and known as the "rock crusher," which was used behind performance big-block engines and in some Corvettes. These M22 units are highly sought-after for performance applications. The term "rock crusher" refers to the noise made by the meshing of the stronger helical gears in the M22.
There also was a second, heavy-duty close-ratio version: the “Rock Crusher” (M22) that was offered on some of the high-performance big-block models, starting with the 1965 Corvette.
The M22 Rock Crusher would come later to accommodate the heavy twist of Chevrolet''s big-blocks in the mid-1960s. The M20 and M21 transmissions produced from 1963-''74 are easy to identify in both
Across the top of the page are the words “First Build 4/15/65 – 1st Shipment 4/19/65, recap of M22 (Rock Crusher) Trans.” By comparing these M22 transmission assemblies to Chevrolet’s 1965 transmission identification codes, I found a perfect match.

A video with better audio of the nostalgic sound of a Muncie M22 (Rock Crusher) transmission at work in a 1966 Chevrolet Chevelle.
the old "Rock Crusher" was a "close ratio trans, the same as the M21... the new "wide" in a widfe ratio, similar to the M20 (ratio-wise)... Both version will have similar RPM drops between 1st-2nd and 2nd-3rd, but the wide ratio will have a bigger drop between 3rd-4th, hence the "wide ratio" name...
